Meet Gatha
Hi friends!
My name is Gatha Stevenson, and I am announcing as a candidate for Rockingham County
Board of Education District 1 seat. I am running because I place an extremely high value on the quality of our schools and the education of our children.
A little bit about me
I was born in Newark, NJ. I’m the mother of one son, Dominique’ Stevenson.
Reidsville became my home in the early 70s when my grandfather, David Rone passed away. He had a nice little farm right off highway 158. My mother Daisy Rone Alston returned home with her children (five boys & one girl), to be closer to her mother Virginia Rone and to help with the farm.
My grandmother Virginia Brown Rone passed away 51 years later, at the age of 109, in 2023.

I attended Reidsville Middle School in the sixth grade. I immediately developed a passion for education while admiring my teachers. They were kind and compassionate yet strong.
I wanted to be just like them, Thelma Hines, Mazelle Roberts, Gracie Graves, Susan Lane, and Exia Woods. Just to name a few.
I attended Winston-Salem State University in 1980 - 1984 to become an educator. My dream came true in 1987 when I was hired with Reidsville City Schools as a teacher at South End Elementary School.
After teaching for 30 years, I retired in 2018 from Rockingham County Schools. Most of my career I taught at Moss Street Elementary School. In 2003 I was named Moss Street Teacher of the year. I came full circle when I went back to South End Elementary School to retire.
I have spent most of my professional life in education.
Therefore, my vision to see teachers, students, and parents come together to build our community and future of our children.
I am particularly concerned about the following aspects of public education in our community at this time.
- The cost of education both now and in the future. I believe we must make significant progress in the identification of full program costs and related effectiveness.
- The absence of well thought out goals and plans for our schools. I believe our schools should have a clearly articulated direction and measurable goals against which we can track our progress.
- How the Board Views Its Responsibilities. I believe the paramount duty of Board members is to ensure that our schools are not only effectively but also ethically and strategically managed, fostering an environment where educational excellence and integrity thrive.
It would be beneficial to work together to create a team that will ensure the highest possible
level of academic achievement for all children.
I am running because I believe our community share my concerns about our schools. Knowing I will need help in the campaign, I am asking for your support in ensuring the best possible education for our students.
Our school system is one of our community’s greatest assets – and the outcome of this election will have a significant impact and lasting effect on that asset, and the educational experiences of our children for years to come.
